Donald Trump’s reaction to Jerry Jones’ purchase of the Dallas Cowboys has gone re-viral on social media following Forbes’ list of the most-valuable NFL franchises.
Back in 1984, Donald Trump had a chance to purchase the Dallas Cowboys for $50 million – yes, you read that correctly. Instead, the now-former United States president decided to purchase the New Jersey Generals of the USFL for $10 million.
“I feel sorry for the poor guy who is going to buy the Dallas Cowboys,” Trump said. “It’s a no-win situation for him, because if he wins, well, so what, they’ve won through the years, and if he loses, which seems likely because they’re having troubles, he’ll be known to the world as a loser.”
Trump added: “I could have bought an NFL club for $40 million or $50 million, but it’s established and you would just see it move laterally. Not enough to create there.”
Donald Trump passed on buying the Cowboys in 1984 for $50M saying he felt “sorry for the poor guy who is going to buy” the team.
Today, Forbes says the Cowboys are worth $6.5B, meaning if Trump bought the team, it would have yielded a 20.7% annual compound growth for 38 years. pic.twitter.com/S5pOryoLzB

A couple of years later, Jerry Jones purchased the Cowboys for $140 million. Decades later, America’s Team is worth more than $6 billion.
Forbes named the Cowboys the most-valuable franchise in the NFL at $6.5 billion.

Fans are now thinking about what could have been if Trump had purchased the Cowboys back in the 1980s.
“Yeah but he would’ve screwed them up worse than Jerry has, and they’d never have traded Herschel Walker for all those picks that led them to 90s glory and a higher valuation,” one fan tweeted.
“I would have felt sorry too. The dude who bought it in ‘84 had to sell it 5 years later during the Savings and Loan Crisis. Then Jerry Jones bought it in ‘89,” another fan added.
“I was under the impression the other owners would have to vote to allow you into an ownership role. Did they vote to approve him as an owner?” one fan wondered.
Donald Trump, NFL owner, certainly would have been interesting to follow. It’s also fair to wonder if he would have gone on to a career in politics if he owned an established NFL team.
Alas, Jerry Jones still owns the Cowboys and will continue to reap the benefits.
