Dallas Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy owns a 5-1 record through the first six weeks of the 2021 season, but there are still plenty of questions surrounding his decision-making.
During this past weekend’s game against the New England Patriots, McCarthy called a timeout on 4th-and-1, leaving a lot of time on the clock before their game-tying field goal attempt. Even though the field goal attempt from Greg Zuerlein was good, there were more than 20 seconds remaining on the clock. That actually could’ve cost the Cowboys the game.
While on 105.3 The Fan this Tuesday, Cowboys owner Jerry Jones was asked about McCarthy’s clock management. To the surprise of absolutely no one, Jones defended McCarthy.
“I’m right in there with [Mike McCarthy] on his game management,” Jones said. “I think he does it extremely well. More importantly I want all our fans to know how conscientious about how hard he works on it, the detail of situational rehearsal and practice he does.”

Jones did the right thing by defending McCarthy’s clock management, but his recent comments aren’t sitting well with Cowboys fans.
“I always appreciate how Jerry Jones goes to bat for his players and coaches, but he’s wrong here,” a Cowboys fan tweeted. “McCarthy can’t manage critical situations. It is the Achilles’ heel of his coaching ability. I’d love to see what Kellen Moore might do in those spots as a head coach.”

“Six weeks in and he hasn’t made a good clock management decision yet,” one fan replied.

“Worse game manager in football. Just AWFUL,” another fan said. “Doesn’t do anything during the game. Can’t even manage a game right. Fire McCarthy, Promote Kellen [Moore].”

The Cowboys aren’t going to fire McCarthy for one mistake, especially when they’re a legitimate Super Bowl contender.
Judging by the fans’ responses, however, Dallas’ fan base is running out of patience with McCarthy.
