Packers Could Trade $96 Million Bust After Devastating Loss

January 12, 2026 by Last Word On Pro Football

Following a fourth-quarter nail-biting loss, the Green Bay Packers are trending in hot water this upcoming offseason as they may trade defensive end Rashan Gary. The former first-round pick sustained his worst season as a Green Bay Packer after not recording a single sack since Week 8. This could be enough for the Packers to officially move on despite giving him a massive contract extension in 2023 for four years. Green Bay may restructure his deal to make the trade happen, as his current deal will have a huge hit to the team’s salary cap, so they will ensure that gets done before moving him.

Packers Could Trade $96 Million Bust Rashan Gary After Devastating Loss – 3 Potential Destinations

After a difficult matchup against Chicago, the Packers will have no other choice but to trade him to a team that can get him back to speed. Originally selected in the 2019 NFL Draft, the defensive end has been effective for the majority of his career. However, following the Micah Parsons trade, this changed the scenery for him in a significant way. From being a Pro Bowler in 2024, Gary shouldn’t have an issue finding a new team if rosters are willing to get him in a trade.

While Green Bay was hopeful that Gary would improve after Parsons tore his Achilles, it hasn’t gone as planned. The Packers might fire head coach Matt LaFleur either way, as he and Green Bay’s front office will likely come together to discuss a potential contract extension. If LaFleur is gone, this only ramps up the Gary trade rumors.

Possible Next Teams

Baltimore Ravens

After firing John Harbaugh, many should expect the Baltimore Ravens to overhaul the roster on both sides of the ball. The Ravens could use some help on offense, but they can’t ignore improving their defense, which was one of the worst this past 2025 season. Despite extending Travis Jones and John Jenkins to new contracts, it shows that the Ravens are prioritizing the strengthening of their defensive line. Baltimore could continue that and trade for Gary as a reliable, efficient upgrade over Brent Urban and CJ Okoye.

While they have a ton of impending defensive free agents, including Kyle Van Noy, they should still target Gary to bring some life to Baltimore. The Ravens used to have a solid defense before losing several linebackers, like Malik Harrison and Odafe Oweh, even though they made up for it in some sense after acquiring Dre’Mont Jones.

Dallas Cowboys

Meanwhile, the Dallas Cowboys have improved their interior defensive line with Kenny Clark, Osa Odighizuwa and added Quinnen Williams via a trade before the deadline in November. However, this unit can only make an impact if Dallas improves the edge and adds more defensive ends. Jadeveon Clowney and Dante Fowler Jr. are slated to hit the market, and Dallas only plans to retain Clowney.

The team could use more of a long-term defensive end, and given that the Packers agreed with the Cowboys on a trade involving Parsons, Gary joining Clark should be a good thing as far as chemistry.

Los Angeles Chargers

Head Coach Jim Harbaugh loves winning football games in the trenches, and it shouldn’t be surprising if the team continues to find ways to improve the unit. After signing Da’Shawn Hand and bringing back Teair Tart, the Chargers have been slow, so they could use some help, no matter the outcome of their wild-card matchup. The team losing Poona Ford last offseason was a huge loss, and the Chargers could make up for that and get Gary.
