Patriots May Be Forced to Cut $69 Million Weapon After Super Bowl

February 3, 2026 by Last Word On Pro Football

After having one of the worst years in 2024, New England Patriots star receiver Stefon Diggs is having a resurgent campaign this season, but the team could be forced to cut him in the offseason. The Patriots have their eyes set on adding a Super Bowl for the first time since the Tom Brady era, but the team will face many questions about the future of this offense. While quarterback Drake Maye has solidified himself as the long-term answer, it looks like the Patriots may cut Diggs. Bleacher Report thinks the Patriots will cut the receiver due to cap space, which he’s in line for a hefty payday after the Super Bowl of almost $17 million after signing a $69 million contract.

However, Diggs continues to face controversy outside the field. After the latest trouble, the receiver’s time might be up depending on his pending court case.

Patriots May Be Forced to Cut $69 Million Weapon Stefon Diggs After Super Bowl – 3 Potential Fits May Emerge

Originally selected in the fifth-round of the 2015 NFL Draft, the former Maryland product joined the Patriots’ supposed rebuild season. It turned out well for both sides, with Maye leading New England to their first Super Bowl since 2019. It’s reasonable that the team would want to keep Diggs for the long-term, but given his recent legal trouble, the Patriots could be in hot water. This isn’t to say New England won’t support Diggs, but it can get messy if the court rules against the receiver.

For the time being, the Patriots are focused on the big game, and if New England does release Diggs during the offseason, here are three teams that could acquire him for one last run if he’s victorious in his legal battle.

Next Possible Fits

Dallas Cowboys

The Dallas Cowboys are hoping to retain wide receiver George Pickens, but Jerry Jones has famously let a lot of key players either walk in free agency or be traded. Micah Parsons and Rico Dowdle are just a few of the examples this past offseason. Unfortunately, the Cowboys can’t re-sign every player that will hit the market, but Pickens is easily someone they can’t afford to lose.

Meanwhile, the team is expected to lose Jalen Tolbert after having an abysmal 2025 campaign, so the Cowboys will be searching for another receiver anyway. Even if Dallas retains Pickens, they still need one last weapon to help Pickens and CeeDee Lamb. Diggs could be an intriguing name for the Cowboys since Jones loves giving players second chances from legal trouble, and everyone could soon see Pickens, Lamb and Diggs on one roster for at least one season if the Patriots cut the resurgent receiver.

Buffalo Bills

A reunion with Josh Allen could be possible. The Buffalo Bills trading Stefon Diggs a few offseasons ago sent the league shockwaves. Since trading the star, the Bills have been struggling to get stardom in their receiver unit. Khalil Shakir, Joshua Palmer and Keon Coleman are all solid contributors to the pass game, but they haven’t done anything spectacular on the level of Diggs.

Minnesota Vikings

Nobody should rule out the possibility of Diggs joining the Vikings for at least a Super Bowl run. The Vikings attempted to get something out of Adam Thielen this past season, but it didn’t work out in their favor due to JJ McCarthy’s inconsistency and injuries. While they regret letting Sam Darnold walk in free agency, the team could bring back some star power in its arsenal to better support McCarthy. Diggs is a blast from the past, but he’s easily one of the better pass-catchers than Jordan Addison and could help Justin Jefferson.
