REPORT: Chiefs “Likely” To Trade Former First Rounder Before 2025 Season

May 12, 2025 by Last Word On Pro Football

chiefs trade marquise brown

Even with the 2025 NFL draft over, there’s still a chance that the Kansas City Chiefs could trade former first-round pick Marquise Brown. According to Pro Football Network, the source believes the former back-to-back Super Bowl Champions may send Brown to a new team if 2025 draft pick Jalen Royals impresses, especially during the preseason. It looks like it may be impossible for the Chiefs to trade away Brown after just re-signing him to a one-year deal, but there’s still a solid chance that the team could open to sending him to a new roster. Originally selected in the 2019 NFL Draft, the former Oklahoma product became a dependable option for the Ravens, but the team sent him during the 2022 NFL Draft to the Arizona Cardinals, where he only spent two seasons with them.

Brown is a journeyman, which is another reason why it shouldn’t surprise anyone if he winds up on a new roster. The wide receiver was hoping to carve out a role and help Patrick Mahomes in the aerial attack last year, but it didn’t turn out like he hoped. After the Xavier Worthy offseason drama, the Chiefs were quick to re-sign Brown to a new deal in case they were going to be without the second-year receiver for the season. However, it looks like it’s all positive signs for Worthy.

Even though Rashee Rice and Worthy will take up most of the slot snaps, the emergence of Royals could come at the wrong time for Brown. He has the same body type and elusiveness as Rice and Worthy, so it’ll be interesting to see how the wide receiver competition plays out. If they don’t need Brown anymore, then these three teams could pursue a potential trade conversation.

REPORT: Chiefs “Likely” To Trade Former First Rounder Marquise Brown Before 2025 Season

3 Logical Fits

Dallas Cowboys

The Dallas Cowboys might not be done yet in adding another wide receiver despite trading for George Pickens. The team still could use the depth even though they have two dynamic playmakers, including CeeDee Lamb. Quarterback Dak Prescott needs all the weapons he can get to not only succeed in the regular season but the playoffs, which the Cowboys have struggled in for so many years. Marquise Brown has more experience than their third man receiver, Jalen Tolbert, who has a lot of upside, but can’t carry on the momentum in certain moments.

Brown has that “it” factor to turn the receiver unit from good to great.

Carolina Panthers

Meanwhile, the Panthers shouldn’t feel afraid to be aggressive before the 2025 regular season. They just had two worst back-to-back years with an incapable pass attack and a quarterback who didn’t have much help in the offense. However, Bryce Young has no choice but to excel with the emergence of Tetairoa McMillian and unproven wideouts in Xavier Legette and Jalen Coker. Adam Thielen is entering the final year of his NFL career, and Brown could build the bridge of transition to cover the slot behind Legette and Coker.

Chicago Bears

If the rumors are true, DJ Moore could be in a uniform for the 2025 campaign. After drafting wide receiver Luther Burden, the Bears are rebuilding a new receiver unit for quarterback Caleb Williams. If they lose Moore, Marquise Brown is the perfect replacement who could take on duties to make an impact while the Bears continue to develop talent.
