Report: Former Panthers Second Rounder Named Trade Candidate

June 20, 2025 by Last Word On Pro Football

After coming off a down year last season, Buffalo Bills wide receiver Curtis Samuel could be a possible trade candidate before the 2025 regular season. According to a report, the wideout is in danger of losing his job this upcoming campaign after having one of the worst seasons in his career. Originally selected in the 2017 NFL Draft, the former Ohio State product began his career with the Carolina Panthers, hoping to carve out a long-term role in their offensive unit. Despite putting up some promising numbers in 2020, it wasn’t enough for the Panthers to keep him, so the Washington Commanders gave him another opportunity.

Samuel didn’t have much success in Washington until the last year he spent with the team before the new regime took over last year under head coach Dan Quinn. The wide receiver signed a three-year contract with the Bills, but he might not make the cut, considering the Bills brought in multiple replacements at the position. After signing Joshua Palmer and Elijah Moore, the receiver is at risk of losing his starting spot, even though he has optimism that he will have a breakout season this year. It will likely come down to Moore and Samuel to fight for the last receiver slot, and if Samuel doesn’t win, these four suitors could take a chance if he becomes available on the trade block.

Report: Former Panthers Second-Rounder Curtis Samuel Named Trade Candidate – 4 Possible Suitors

Potential Next Teams

Baltimore Ravens

The Bills won’t make a trade with the Baltimore Ravens, but Samuel could fit with the scheme. Despite signing DeAndre Hopkins to bolster the wide receiver department behind Rashod Bateman and Zay Flowers, the Ravens could use a solid WR4. Since Samuel doesn’t put up top-notch numbers, he doesn’t need to as long as he can make a few crucial catches to stretch the ball down the field.

Dallas Cowboys

Meanwhile, it wouldn’t hurt to add another receiver for this already spectacular offense for Dak Prescott. Between George Pickens and CeeDee Lamb, they are their own No. 1 pass-catchers, so they may need a solid slot to pair with Jalen Tolbert. They have Jonathan Mingo in the mix, but there’s no guarantee he will do much of anything after a disastrous campaign last year. Samuel might not improve this pass-catching unit drastically, but could put up a few solid yardage alongside Tolbert, Mingo and Kavontae Turpin.

Los Angeles Chargers

However, the Los Angeles Chargers should feel desperate for a difference maker to help quarterback Justin Herbert feel more comfortable slinging it in the aerial attack. Quentin Johnston has yet to prove, and veteran Mike Williams is washed up, so that leaves an untested Tre Harris and 2024 draft pick Ladd McConkey to dish it out to bring some type of life for the offense. Samuel could be a reliable slant routing receiver to tag along with McConkey and create some separation to make life easier for Herbert.

Washington Commanders

No one should rule out the possibility of a reunion. The Washington Commanders lose Noah Brown in minicamp and even though it won’t affect the core receivers of Terry McLaurin, Deebo Samuel and Luke McCaffrey, they may have to get one more receiver to tag with McCaffrey. Samuel doesn’t need to put in a ton of yards, but be a crucial chain-mover in the slot alongside McCaffrey and Michael Gallup.
