Ever since Roy Williams left the Cowboys in 2008 the Cowboys have had what seems like a revolving door at the safety position. Every year experts peg them to take a safety early in the draft, but each year they go against the grain. I was a big advocate of the Malik Hooker signing this off-season, but is he in the Cowboys long-term plans? Can they rely on him to stay healthy for long periods of time?
University of Michigan safety, Daxton Hill has been a fairly popular mock draft selection for the Cowboys. In the old Dan Quinn Cover-3 defense,he would need a true centerfielder at safety to make it effective, like an Earl Thomas or a Malik Hooker of old. But he has incorporated significantly more man into his scheme in his return to the coordinator role. That eliminates the glaring need for a centerfielder type safety as the team needs one to be responsible for only half the field. That is where Hill thrives, playing in deep zones, with his eyes on the QB being responsible for half the field.
Could he be a fit for the new-look Dallas defense? Here’s a look at the prospect and how he could fit with the Cowboys this coming season and beyond.
