“This Is My Last Year” – NFL Legend Free Agent Seeking One More Season

May 31, 2025 by Last Word On Pro Football

One NFL free agent tight end, Marcedes Lewis, is seeking at least one more season in the league, and he will retire after the 2025 campaign. According to reports, the veteran wants to play one more year, and the tight end will plan to finally retire after 20 straight seasons between three teams. Originally selected in the first round of the 2006 NFL Draft, the former UCLA product is probably one of the oldest active players who has yet to find a home in the league. Lewis appeared on the Up & Adams Show to speak on where he is in his career, and it seems like this will be his final season if everything goes well in finding at least a new team to play for.

Lewis barely misses games, so he could sign with a roster that needs another playmaker. He doesn’t get the most snaps since he’s older, but the tight end has been durable these last few years. The former Pro Bowler didn’t have the most productive 2024 season, so it’ll be interesting to see what type of market he will have. Lewis had the most notable seasons with the Jaguars, even though they were in their “rebuilding” era for several years after keeping them afloat for the last 10 years.

He had some moments with the Green Bay Packers for at least four seasons, but nothing to prove that he could be a starter anymore. Lewis might not start again in this league, but these five teams could take a chance on him.

“This Is My Last Year” – NFL Legend Free Agent Marcedes Lewis Seeking One More Season, Top 5 Fits

Possible Next Teams

Los Angeles Chargers

The NFL offseason has been one of the worst for the Los Angeles Chargers in terms of improving their pass attack. Even though they signed Tyler Conklin, they need a consistent weapon other than the 2024 draft pick, Ladd McConkey. Quentin Johnston and veteran Mike Williams won’t single-handedly carry the offensive passing for quarterback Justin Herbert, so they might as well upgrade the tight end department. Lewis might be past his prime, but he could help bolster the offense behind Will Dissly and Conklin as a three-set tight end unit.

New Orleans Saints

Meanwhile, the Saints are just one more crack in their organization from possibly having one of the most embarrassing offseasons in the league. After Derek Carr’s retirement, the Saints are without an adequate quarterback to lead this roster. Juwan Johnson has some upside, but since Chris Olave continues to be linked to several trade rumors, they could use someone like Lewis as another weapon in the aerial attack to help save this offense.

Dallas Cowboys

Tight end Jake Ferguson needs to step up hugely after failing to meet expectations last year, since missing some time due to injury. Despite trading for George Pickens, the Dallas Cowboys have a questionable tight end room. Luke Schoonmaker isn’t making it any better in that department, but perhaps Lewis could have one phenomenal year to revive this group before he hangs his cleats.

Washington Commanders

The Commanders are in the best spot with quarterback Jayden Daniels leading this roster to a Super Bowl next year. Even though it’s still early, they have a promising culture under head coach Dan Quinn and an offensive pass attack that’s getting better with Terry McLaurin and free agent signee Deebo Samuel. Lewis could join this roster to win a ring, possibly and help Zach Ertz and John Bates in the aerial attack.

Baltimore Ravens

However, veteran Mark Andrews and the Ravens are close to parting ways since he’s been the subject of trade rumors for the majority of the offseason. No one will take Isaiah Likely’s job, but maybe Lewis could be revived by quarterback Lamar Jackson. Lewis won’t impact much on this offense, but could even be a reliable pass-blocker.
