“Writing Is On The Wall” – Depleted Jets Could Trade Fifth-Round Bust

October 17, 2025 by Last Word On Pro Football

Despite signing him to a contract extension last year, the New York Jets could be open to trade cornerback Michael Carter before the deadline next month. Jeremy Fowler of ESPN believes the Jets may trade Carter since the writing is already on the wall due to the major moves the team made in their secondary. After drafting Azareye’h Thomas and trading for Jarvis Brownlee last month, the Jets are building a new regime either way since firing Robert Saleh and Joe Douglas last season. With the Jets being winless this year, they could be open to a trade involving Carter, even though his current deal runs through 2027.

It’s easier to trade someone like running back Breece Hall, as he’s slated to become a free agent this upcoming offseason if the Jets decide not to extend him. However, between these two athletes, they would likely retain Hall over Carter since Hall continues to be a viable piece for the Jets offense despite not winning a game yet. Originally selected in the 2021 NFL Draft, the former Duke product hasn’t been the same since signing his new deal. After suffering a herniated disk last year, accompanied by an ankle injury, it’s safe to say that the Jets should trade him before his value dwindles.

The Jets aren’t going to get a lot in return, but he should be a solid slot corner behind a team that needs depth. Carter isn’t the most intriguing trade piece, but he has been able to record about 74% of defensive snaps, which made him earn an extension.

Possible Next Teams

Philadelphia Eagles

It hasn’t been all sunshine and rainbows for the Philadelphia Eagles this 2025 campaign, coming off their Super Bowl win. After their loss to the New York Giants, the team could be heading in the wrong direction, and it might get worse before it gets better. While they’re dealing with drama between wide receiver AJ Brown and the offense led by Jalen Hurts, they have a huge need in their secondary room. While they have Cooper DeJean and Quinyon Mitchell as two reliable slot cornerbacks for this unit, the same can’t be said about Adoree’ Jackson and Kelee Ringo.

There’s a need between Jackson and Ringo, who haven’t been able to pull their own weight since the team lost Jakorian Bennett despite just trading for him this season. Carter won’t single-handedly strengthen this cornerback room, but it gives them another body to depend on to make impactful plays in situational moments.

Dallas Cowboys

Meanwhile, the Dallas Cowboys are in the same boat. However, Trevon Diggs continues to play this year like he is looking to depart. While they did re-sign DaRon Bland to a new extension, he’s been dealing with injury issues and performing well on the field. They could shift the blame to defensive coordinator Matt Eberflus, but if Dallas wants to see at least some improvement, then they have to get someone fresh.

The Cowboys tried to reset the cornerback room through trading for Kaiir Elam, but he hasn’t lived up to expectations. Carter won’t start, but it allows Dallas to rotate between him, Reddy Steward and hopefully a returning Caelen Carson.

Chicago Bears

Even though the Bears need pass-rush help, they can’t afford to forget about the secondary unit. With Kyler Gordon returning soon, the Bears should use this to their advantage and trade for Carter. This buys the Bears a lot of time to work between Gordon and Carter to share snaps since they lost Jaylon Johnson to IR.
