Taking a look at potential Texas Rangers draft pick Nick Dumesnil
2025 MLB Draft Preview: Nick Dumesnil scouting report
The 2025 MLB Draft is a little over a month away — the first round kicks off on July 13, 2025 — so its time to start offering capsule looks at players the Texas Rangers could select with their top picks. The Rangers’ first round pick is at #12, their second round pick is at #52, and their third round pick is at #84.
Leading up to draft day, we will be doing writeups of some of the players who could end up getting selected by the Rangers with one of their first three picks. Today we are looking at California Baptist outfielder Nick Dumesnil.
Nick Dumesnil is a righthanded hitting centerfielder who graduated from Huntington Beach High School in Huntington Beach, California (where he was teammates with 2023 Guardians first rounder Ralphy Velazquez) in 2022, and just finished his junior year at California Baptist University. He is listed at 6’2”, 210 lbs.
Dumesnil impressed with hit and power combination, particularly in the wood-bat Cape Cod League, in 2024. His contact rates, particularly against fastballs, had him viewed as a potential five tool guy. Concerns have arisen about his bat this spring, however, as his contact rate and power have dropped, and he has struggled against spin.
Defensively, Dumesnil has played center field in college, but has played all three positions in summer leagues. He’s got good but not great speed, and there are differing opinions as to whether he can stay in center field or if he will have to move to a corner spot.
After playing sparingly as a freshman, Dumesnil took a big step forward as a sophomore, slashing .362/.440/.702 with 35 Ks against 20 walks in 271 plate appearances, followed by an impressive showing in the Cape Cod League, where he slashed .311/.377/.489 with 26 steals in 27 attempts. Dumesnil’s power numbers dipped some in 2025, as he slashed .360/.442/.598 with 55 Ks against 29 walks in 278 plate appearances, though he was 27 for 33 in stolen base attempts.
Baseball America has Dumesnil ranked #52 on their top 500 list. MLB Pipeline’s draft rankings have Dumesnil at #120. Keith Law’s top 100 list has Dumesnil checking in at #69. Kiley McDaniel’s top 150 list has Dumesnil coming in at #150. Dumesnil isn’t on the Fangraphs board.
Dumesnil is an interesting case — after his stellar sophomore year, he came into the 2025 season ranked #11 on BA’s board, but his stock has dropped as a result of his less-stellar junior year performance at the plate. As a result, he’s gone from someone who might have been off the board when the Rangers made their first pick to someone who could be available when the Rangers pick in the third or fourth rounds.
Dumesnil doesn’t exactly fit the profile of what the Rangers look for in college hitters, having played in the Western Athletic Conference rather than one of the top-tier conferences, and with questions about his hit tool cropping up. Still, one could see him being an option come rounds three or four. Yes, he could end up being a guy with contact issues and no carrying tool, a guy who ends up stalling out as organizational depth in AA. But if he rebounds to the guy who scouts saw in 2024, he could be a nice well-rounded outfielder, a potential top ten pick who ends up being a steal in the later rounds.
