39-69 – Rangers help Ohtani’s MVP case with 2-1 loss to Angels

MLB: Los Angeles Angels at Texas Rangers

Not nice

The Texas Rangers scored one run but the Anaheim Angels scored two runs.

There’s no shame in losing to the expected league MVP, I guess. Still, with Anaheim held to just a couple of runs, Texas had a great chance to pin a loss on the hated Angels but the bats could only muster six hits and had an 0-for-the evening with runners in scoring position.

After a win the opener, the Rangers have dropped the next two games in this series which means they’ll be looking to salvage a split in tomorrow afternoon’s finale.

Player of the Game: A surprise to no one, the Rangers didn’t get much going at the plate against the American League MVP in waiting Shohei Ohtani, but a pleasant surprise was Texas starter Kolby Allard matching him nearly zero for zero.

After a miserable July, Allard bounced back tonight and allowed two runs on six hits and zero walks with three strikeouts in the same number of innings (six) as Ohtani. Alas, two runs was as many as the Angels needed to pin another loss on Allard.

Up Next: The Rangers and Angels close out this series with right-handed hurling prospect prize Spencer Howard set to make his debut for Texas against RHP Dylan Bundy for Anaheim. First pitch in Thursday’s finale from The Shed is scheduled for 1:05 pm CT.
