Dahl DFA’d, Evans optioned, Herget added

MLB: Detroit Tigers at Texas Rangers

The Rangers have designated David Dahl for assignment and have swapped out a couple of relieves

The Texas Rangers have added newly claimed outfielder D.J. Peters to their active roster and have purchased the contract of pitcher Jimmy Herget from AAA Round Rock. To open up a spot on the active roster for Peters, the Rangers have optioned pitcher Demarcus Evans to Round Rock. To clear a spot on the active and 40 man roster for Herget, the Rangers have designated outfielder David Dahl for assignment.

The biggest move here is Dahl getting the axe. Signed to a free agent contract after he was surprisingly non-tendered by the Colorado Rockies, Dahl was given the left field job amid hopes that he could stay healthy and fulfill the promise he showed in his prospect days. Neither happened, however…Dahl spent time on the injured list, and put up an anemic 569 OPS. Dahl spending an extended time in the minors on his rehab assignment earlier this summer was an indication that something was up, and with Peters apparently able to be added, Dahl is now superfluous. The Rangers can’t trade him due to the trade deadline being past, so he has to be waived or released.

Herget replacing Evans may be a matter of getting a fresh arm up — Evans pitched yesterday — or it may be a matter of the Rangers wanting Evans to work on some things in the minors, or it may be a combination. Herget was a surprise presence on the waiver wire this spring, but went unclaimed and was outrighted. He has pitched very well for Round Rock this year, and now joins Jharel Cotton and Drew Anderson as guys who have spent the year in Round Rock who are essentially getting try outs in the Rangers major league pen.
