Rafael Devers is reportedly getting shipped from Boston to San Francisco
MLB Trade Rumors: Rafael Devers is being dealt to the San Francisco Giants from the Boston Red Sox, per multiple reports.
Pitchers Kyle Harrison and Jordan Hicks are reportedly part of the deal as well.
Devers, 28, is in the second year of a 10 year, $313.5 million dollar deal that the Red Sox signed him to prior to his hitting the free agent market, with Boston seemingly motivated, at least in part, by a desire to avoid losing Devers in free agency after shortstop Xander Bogaerts signed with San Diego.
Devers has slashed .271/.400/.494 this year, and is leading the American League in walks. However, he balked this offseason at being asked to move from third base to designated hitter to accommodate the newly signed Alex Bregman. Though he acquiesced, after first baseman Tristan Casas was lost for the season, he refused the team’s request that he play first base. That tension no doubt was at least part of the motivation for this deal.
More details when they become available.
UPDATE — Per Jeff Passan, minor league prospect James Tibbs and another prospect are going to Boston, and Boston is not subsidizing any part of Devers’ contract.
UPDATE II — Pitcher Jose Bello, a 20 year old in the ACL, is reportedly the other prospect going to Boston.
Tibbs, 22, is a corner outfielder who was the 14th overall pick in the 2024 draft out of Florida State. He is slashing .245/.377/.480 in the high-A Northwest League this season.
