Former Texas Rangers All-Star Set to Retire

September 5, 2024 by Last Word On Baseball

Former Texas Rangers shortstop and two-time All-Star Elvis Andrus has announced that he plans to retire this Friday. The 36-year-old started his MLB career in 2009, debuting with Texas. He was an All-Star in 2010 and 2012. In 2017, he also received the Rangers Player of the Year Award. Now that he’s announced his retirement, he can make a strong case for his induction into the Rangers Hall of Fame.

Two-Time All-Star Elvis Andrus Announces He Will Retire

Andrus played for the Rangers for 12 seasons until 2020. He has also played for the Oakland Athletics and Chicago White Sox, signing with the latter as a free agent. Before the 2024 regular season, he signed with the Arizona Diamondbacks in March on a minor league contract. Andrus has not played this season following his release, as he missed the cut-off date for the Opening Day roster.

Elvis Has Left the Building

Andrus will retire as a Ranger on Friday and get the opportunity to throw the first pitch against the Los Angeles Angels. Former teammate Michael Young and manager Ron Washington (now the Angels skipper) will attend the press conference scheduled for that day, and Young will throw the first pitch with Andrus. Once he retires, a job within the Rangers organization could be in his future. In 2022, he reached a significant milestone, reaching his 1,900th career game. He also reached an even more substantial milestone, collecting his 2,000th career hit.

Andrus is a veteran shortstop who has never won a Gold Glove Award or World Series, but did have a very successful career. For his career, he recorded 102 home runs, 775 RBI, and 347 stolen bases. He has also recorded a career WAR of 34.2 and 2,091 hits. It will be interesting to see where the future takes Andrus as he bids farewell to his playing days.
