MLB Draft Day Two discussion thread

Talk about Day Two of the MLB Draft

Today is Day Two of the 2025 MLB Draft, which will feature rounds 4 through 20. Day Two of the draft begins at 10:30 a.m. Central.

As a reminder, under the arcane rules of the MLB Draft, a team’s bonus pool is determined by the pick value of every pick the team has in the first ten rounds. A team only gets allocated that pick value in their pool, however, if they sign the player. Thus, in the later part of the first ten rounds, it is not uncommon for teams to draft college seniors or other players who are easily signable for an amount well below slot, in order to apply the savings to other picks.

Players drafted after the 10th round, as well as draft-eligible players who go undrafted, can be signed for up to $150,000 without it counting against a team’s bonus pool. Any amounts spent above $150,000 count against the bonus pool.

Players still on the board who we wrote up as part of our pre-draft previews:

Charles Davalan

Daniel Dickinson

Other names who are possible selections for the Rangers in the fourth round (or later, I guess):

Jared Spencer, LHP, University of Texas. 22 year old who was drafted but didn’t sign last year. Transferred to UT for this season and was very good in 10 starts before shoulder surgery ended his season. Really good stuff, iffy command, injury and reliever risk. The Rangers took David Hagaman and Garrett Horn last year coming off of surgeries.

Mason Neville, LH OF, Oregon, and Gavin Turley, RH OF, Oregon State. Two guys who are ranked 59 and 66, respectively, by BA and have “tool shed” in the first sentence of their write-ups. Both have power, speed and good arms, both have contact issues, especially against secondaries.

Luke Hill, RH infielder, Ole Miss. Good hit tool, good approach and pitch recognition, not much power, probably a 2B or 3B as a pro.

Matt Scott, RHP, Stanford. Drafted by the Rangers in the 20th round in 2022. 6’7”, 245 lbs., quality stuff, disappointing results in college. Could be an Alejandro Rosario-type project in the fourth or fifth rounds.

Landon Beidelschies, LHP, Arkansas. Lefty who transferred to Arkansas after two seasons at Ohio State. Two quality pitches, middling college results, reliever risk.

Luke Heyman, C, Florida, and Grant Jay, C, Dallas Baptist. A couple of older catchers (each will be 22 by the end of the summer) with power, strong arms, work to be done defensively to stick at catcher, and questions about their hit tool.

Gabe Davis, RHP, Oklahoma State. 6’9” reliever who can touch 100 with his fastball, has a decent slider, struggles to throw strikes, and profiles as a reliever.

Lorenzo Meola, SS, Stetson. Glove-first shortstop with questions about how much he’ll hit.
