Rowdy Tellez is a member of your Texas Rangers
The Texas Rangers have purchased the contract of first baseman/DH Rowdy Tellez from AAA Round Rock, the team announced today. Because there was an open spot on the active roster, and the 40 man roster had two open spots prior to this move, no corresponding roster move was necessary.
We discussed yesterday the reports that Tellez would be joining the Rangers today. Bruce Bochy said that with Jake Burger expected to miss the next two to three weeks, Tellez would be platooning at first base with Justin Foscue, who was called up yesterday (with Michael Helman being sent down to make room for Foscue).
Tellez has a lot of power but not much else to speak of. Since the start of the 2023 season, he has slashed .226/.286/.394.
And after I hit “publish” I saw that the Rangers have also placed Sam Haggerty on the injured list with an ankle injury, and have purchased the contract of Cody Freeman from AAA Round Rock. At first I typed Sam Freeman, which was a blast from the past.
With Freeman being added, the Rangers’ 40 man roster is now full.
Freeman, 24, was the Rangers’ fourth round pick out of Rancho Cucamonga in 2019. An infielder, the Rangers spent a few seasons trying to convert him to catching, which didn’t really work. He had a nice 2024 season at Frisco, and has had a breakout campaign for Round Rock in 2025, slashing .315/.367/.494. He can play all the infield positions and, presumably, would be the Rangers’ emergency catcher as well.
