Mariners 6, Rangers 5
ARLINGTON, Texas, June 5 — The Texas Rangers weren’t quite able to squeak out a win in their series finale against the Seattle Mariners on Sunday, as they lost by a final score of 6–5. Key home runs by Adolis Garcia and Ezequiel Duran helped the Rangers secure the lead at one point, but not the win on this getaway day. From here, they go on a six-game road trip. Starting on Monday, they have three games against the Cleveland Guardians at Progressive Field, and then they’ll start another three-game set against the Chicago White Sox at Guaranteed Rate Field on Friday.
Adolis Does It Again
Adolis Garcia made his mark on the game for the second day in a row. In the bottom of the second inning, Garcia went yard for the tenth time this season. The blast to left-center field put the Rangers ahead by a score of 1–0. It came off Mariners’ starter George Kirby. The fireworks wouldn’t stop with Garcia’s home run, however. In the bottom of the third inning, Marcus Semien hit one over the left field wall to make it 2–0 Rangers.
Something special happened in the bottom of the seventh inning. Rangers’ third baseman Ezequiel Duran hit his first Major League home run to put the Rangers ahead 3–2. Duran, who made his Major League debut on Saturday, also singled in the bottom of the second inning to get his first career hit. It was definitely a very special day for the young infielder. The Rangers extended their lead to 5–2 in the bottom of the eighth inning. Mitch Garver hit a two-run shot to left field. Semien was the man on base at the time.
Mariners Answer Back
The Mariners responded quickly to the deficit. In the top of the fourth inning, Mariners third baseman Eugenio Suarez hit a solo home run to center field. It was his tenth blast of the year, and it put the score at 2–1, still in favor of the Rangers. Suarez also drove in the tying run for Seattle. In the top of the fifth inning, he hit a single to left field that brought home center fielder Julio Rodriguez.
They scored their third run in the top of the ninth inning. They were trailing 5–2, and a solo homer by Ty France made it 5–3. Later in the inning, Suarez doubled in Rodriguez and J.P. Crawford. This game would require extra innings to decide the outcome. With the Rangers and Mariners tied at five runs apiece, a wild pitch from Rangers reliever Brock Burke scored the go-ahead run for the Mariners. It was a very tough loss for the Texas Rangers.
Rangers’ Pitching Notes
Martin Perez got the start on Sunday. He got the no-decision after pitching six innings. He gave two runs, both earned, on seven hits. One of those hits was a home run. He walked two, and struck out seven. Perez posted a career-best ninth straight quality start (6.0 IP, 2 R-ER), matching the longest such streak in Rangers history (nine straight by Kyle Gibson from 4/7-5/21/21).
