Rangers Revamp Outfield with Latest Roster Moves

August 31, 2024 by Last Word On Baseball

Seemingly out of contention, the Texas Rangers are reshaping their lineup after placing outfielders Robbie Grossman and Travis Jankowski on outright waivers. One year after their first World Series title in franchise history, the Rangers at 63-71, have had a disappointing season, all but eliminating themselves from postseason contention. With Grossman and Jankowski both set for free agency at season’s end, Texas will try to clear the pair’s place on the 40-man roster.

Despite their limited playing time, waiving both Grossman and Jankowski is surprising considering the current state of the Rangers’ outfield. Outfielder Evan Carter, their breakout star last postseason, has been sidelined since May with what Texas called lower back tightness. General manager Chris Young said last month that the Rangers are not expecting Carter to play again this season. Rookie Wyatt Langford, despite his own stint on the injured list, has locked left field down in Carter’s absence. While Leody Taveras and Adolis García round out the Rangers outfield. Taking both Grossman and Jankowski out of the equation leaves Texas relying on Langford, Taveras, and García and utilityman Ezequiel Durán down the stretch.

Rangers Reshape Lineup in Latest Roster Move

Since neither Grossman nor Jankowski were designated for assignment, they can still play for Texas until the 48-hour waiver period expires on Saturday. If any club claims either outfielder, then the new club is responsible for the remainder of their contract. Jankowski has about $274,000 remaining in salary and Grossman about $242,000 for the final month of the season. Postseason-contending teams could pursue Grossman for his history against left-handed pitchers and Jankowski’s speed and his defense. If they stay on the wire, they can remain with Texas.

By waiving the pair, the Rangers are likely looking to clear roster spots for the final month of the season. Rookie right-hander Jack Leiter is expected to be recalled for a regular rotation run for the rest of the year. Kumar Rocker, who dominated his Triple-A debut on Wednesday, could also get his first big league opportunity.
