Prep infielder Josh Owens is the Rangers third round pick
The Texas Rangers have selected high school infielder Josh Owens with their third pick in the 2025 MLB Draft, #84 overall. Owens is out of Johnson City, Tennessee, and is committed to Georgia Southern, though presumably will forego that commitment and sign with the Rangers.
You can see our pre-draft write up of Owens here.
Josh Owens is a 6’3”, 185 lb. lefthanded hitting shortstop who was a two-sport athlete in high school, playing football as well as baseball, and also doing some pitching. The son of former career minor leaguer Jeremy Owens, Owens turned 18 in January.
As I noted in the pre-draft write up, the capsule description of Owens — tall, skinny guy out of Tennessee with speed, a good lefthanded stroke, athleticism, projectable power, and a limited track record on the travel circuit — reminded me of Evan Carter. Owens will presumably start his pro career as a shortstop, though he could also get some looks in center field.
Also, I fell asleep early last night, which is why this is just now going up.
