Rangers to be Without Key Contributor for Foreseeable Future

September 5, 2024 by Last Word On Baseball

The Texas Rangers have announced that their star shortstop, Corey Seager, will be on the 10-day injured list due to hip discomfort. Rangers general manager Chris Young notified reporters that it is too early to tell if Seager is done for the year or if he will require surgery, according to MLB.com’s Kennedy Landry. Outfielder Sandro Fabian will take Seager’s place on the roster. Seager didn’t play against the New York Yankees on Tuesday after going 2-for-4 in the series opener Monday. At 66-73, the Rangers are 8 1/2 games back of the postseason, effectively ending their chances of a World Series repeat.

Rangers to Place Corey Seager on Injured List

Evan Grant of The Dallas Morning News writes that the earliest Seager could return to play would be September 16. At that point, the Rangers will only have two weeks remaining in the season. Seager has dealt with a core muscle injury in the offseason. He underwent sports hernia surgery on his left side in January. However, a slow start saw Seager return to his regular self on the field. Seager started at shortstop in 113 of the 123 games he has played with the Rangers. He was hitting a robust .275/.371/.592 with 30 home runs, giving him three straight 30-homer seasons with the Rangers.

As a result of Seager’s absence, the Rangers need to cover shortstop. Josh Smith, Jonathan Ornelas, and Ezequiel Duran have received playing time in the past week, with Seager playing less. However, Smith will start at shortstop against the Yankees on Wednesday.

Seager is in the fourth year of a ten-year deal with the Rangers. With the Los Angeles Dodgers from 2015-21, Seager won the National League Rookie of the Year Award, was a two-time All-Star, and was the World Series MVP in 2020. He hit 104 home runs in 636 games with the Dodgers and 96 home runs in 390 games with Texas.
