Texas Rangers Drop Home Opener to Rockies

April 12, 2022 by Last Word On Baseball

Rangers Rockies

Rockies 6, Rangers 4

ARLINGTON, Texas, April 11 – The Texas Rangers‘ young season has hit a few bumps. They were hoping to enter their first home stand of 2022 with more than just one win, but that is not the case, and their fans wished that it was. One of the only things that they had going for them this week was that they managed to win their series finale over the weekend against the Toronto Blue Jays. In doing so, they avoided a three-game sweep. That really wouldn’t have been the ideal way to begin the 2022 season. They opened their first home stand of 2022 against the Colorado Rockies for a short two-game series. Things did not go much better in their home opener as they lost to the Rockies by a final score of 6–5 in ten innings. Fortunately for the Rangers and their fans, their season isn’t even a week old yet. There are plenty of things to look forward to, but first, here is a recap of Monday afternoon’s content.

Back and Forth

Despite their lack of focus, the Rangers were able to walk away with one positive note. They kept the game close. They never trailed the Rockies by more than two runs the entire afternoon. Colorado, however, got the scoring started. C.J. Cron broke the seal in the top of the first inning. He hit a solo home run that put the Rockies on top 1–0. The score wouldn’t change until the bottom of the fourth inning. The Rangers tied it 1–1 on a double by Nathaniel Lowe that scored Adolis Garcia. Then in the bottom of the fifth inning, Garcia drove in Corey Seager and Charlie Culberson on a single to make it 3–1. Fast forward to the top of the 7th when Colorado made the score 3–2. This run came in the form of Kris Bryant.

He scored on a throwing error by Culberson that also allowed Brendan Rodgers to reach base. The Rockies tied it up in the top of the 8th inning. Jose Iglesias was able to score on a force out that was grounded into by Charlie Blackmon. Colorado would eventually take a 4–3 lead thanks to another home run by Cron.

Strange Ending.

The Rangers were able to strike back quickly though. Willie Calhoun crushed a solo shot of his own to tie it 4–4. The tie would force the game into extra innings. It was eventually broken up by Jose Iglesias. He singled on a line drive to center field that brought in Randal Grichuk. With the score now 5–4, the Rockies’ final score came on a solo homer by Connor Joe. The game did end on a very strange play. With the score at 6–4, the Rangers had two men on in the bottom of the tenth inning.

With one out, Adolis Garcia hit a ground ball to third base. This resulted in a force play at second involving Mitch Garver. On the relay attempt, Brendan Rodgers made a throw that got past the first baseman Cron. This seemingly extended the game with there now being two runners in scoring position. Shortly after a review was called, it was determined that Garver made an illegal slide into second base. That meant that the runner was out at first due to interference. This strange call meant the game was over. It will be interesting to see what happens in the finale of this short two game series between the Rockies and Rangers.

Pitching Notes

Lefty Taylor Hearn started for the Rangers. He pitched four innings. He gave up one earned run on eight hits, one walk, and six strikeouts. Since he only threw four frames, he got the no-decision in his effort. Greg Holland took the loss, bringing his 2022 record to 0–1. Right-hander Daniel Bard got the win in relief for the Rockies. His record is now 1–0. He pitched one inning. He gave up one earned run on a home run.
