Texas Rangers Fall to Red Sox

Rangers Red Sox

Red Sox 7, Rangers 1

ARLINGTON, Texas, May 13 — The Texas Rangers lost to the Boston Red Sox by a final score of 7–1 on Friday evening. Alex Verdugo and Franchy Cordero were big contributors in this one for Boston. They each had RBI doubles to lift the Red Sox to the win. The second game between these two teams is on Saturday. First pitch for this game is at 6:05 PM Central. Righty Glenn Otto (1–0, 3.14 ERA) will be the starting pitcher for the Rangers. The Red Sox’ starter is still to be determined for that contest.

Tough Night for Rangers

The first two frames came and went without a single run scored. Boston broke the seal in the top of the third inning to take the lead. The score was now 1–0 in favor of the Red Sox. Rafael Devers singled on a grounder to left field. He was able to drive in Enrique Hernandez on the play. Fast forward to the top of the sixth inning. The score was still 1–0, but it wouldn’t stay that way for long. Red Sox left fielder Alex Verdugo hit a double to right field. J.D. Martinez scored on the play. It also moved Xander Bogaerts to third base.

Verdugo would eventually be lifted from the game with a right foot contusion. The next hitter was Trevor Story. He hit a sac fly to right field that brought in Bogaerts, thus extending their lead to 3–0 in the top of the sixth inning. Moments later, Franchy Cordero doubled to right, and brought in Alex Verdugo to make it 4–0 Red Sox. Then Christian Vazquez drove in Cordero with a single.

The Red Sox scored their final two runs of the night in the top of the seventh inning. Bogaerts hit a single to left field that drove in Devers and Martinez. Bogaerts, meanwhile, tried to advance to second base, but was out on the throw by Rangers left fielder Brad Miller to third baseman Andy Ibanez to Marcus Semien.

Sleepy at the Plate

The Rangers managed to score only one run on Friday evening. It came in the bottom of the seventh inning. Calhoun tripled in the inning. Then a wild pitch from Boston starter Nick Pivetta to Nathaniel Lowe allowed Calhoun to score from third base. The Rangers’ bats just looked sluggish on Friday night. The home fans are hoping that the second game on Saturday will be different.

Rangers Pitching Notes

Right-hander Dane Dunning got the nod on the hill for the Rangers on Friday. He pitched 5 2/3 innings. It was a rough outing for him as he gave up five earned runs on six hits. He walked two, struck out six, and didn’t give up any home runs. Brett Martin got the last out in the sixth inning, but not before giving up one hit.

Garrett Richards took over in the seventh inning for Texas. He pitched two innings. Two seemed to be the number on Martin’s mind in this game. In those two innings, he surrendered two runs, both earned, on two hits. He also had two strikeouts. Right-hander Josh Sborz was next out of the bullpen for the Rangers. He tossed one inning, giving up one hit and one walk. He also struck out one.

Duuning took the losing decision for the Rangers on Friday. He now has a record of 1–2 on the year with an earned run average of 4.06. Pivetta got the winning decision for the Red Sox. His record is now 1–4 on the season with an earned run average of 5.08. No save was recored.
