ARLINGTON, Texas, May 18 — The Texas Rangers completed the sweep of the Los Angeles Angels on Wednesday night, as they won by a final score of 6–5. Jonah Heim, and Nathaniel Lowe were the heroes in this one. Heim had a couple of base hits, and Lowe had a key home run that propelled the Rangers to the sweep. It is bound to be a very relaxing flight to Houston for Texas. They will begin a three-game set against the Houston Astros on Thursday at Minute Maid Park. The first pitch on Thursday is scheduled for 7:10 PM Central.
Trout Does It Again
Angels’ superstar Mike Trout has proven to be a real nemesis to the Rangers. After Jared Walsh hit a solo shot to put the Angels on the board 1–0 in the first inning, Trout hit his 11th home run of the season in the top of the fourth inning. This put the Halos ahead 2–0. Trout’s homer in the fourth inning was his 43rd career round-tripper against the Texas Rangers, tying Reggie Jackson for the most ever since the Rangers moved to Texas in 1972. Jackson had 54 total homers against the Senators and Rangers.
The Angels wouldn’t score again until the bottom of the ninth inning. It came on a home run by Walsh that also scored Anthony Rendon. This tied the game at four runs apiece. Fast forward to the top of the tenth inning. Trout drove in the go-ahead run on a fielder’s choice. This brought home Andrew Velazquez. This game also saw Angels’ manager Joe Maddon get ejected in the ninth inning by CB Bucknor.
Rangers Keep Slugging
The Rangers have had their share of offense in this series. That is a great problem for manager Chris Woodward to have. It certainly helped the Rangers sweep the Angels. Their offense started in the bottom of the fourth inning. Rangers catcher Jonah Heim singled to left field to drive in shortstop Corey Seager. In the bottom of the sixth inning, Heim stepped up again with an RBI double. The extra base hit drove in Kole Calhoun.
In the bottom of the seventh inning, Brad Miller hit his sixth home run of the season to give the Rangers a 3–2 lead. Then in the bottom of the eighth inning, Calhoun hit his fifth homer of the season to put them ahead 4–2.
Then the big moment came in the bottom of the tenth for the Rangers. With a man on in the person of Charlie Culberson, Lowe stepped to the plate, and blasted a walk-off home run to win it for the Rangers by a final score of 6–5. This sweep had to be especially satisfying for everyone involved.
Rangers Pitching Notes
Despite Rangers’ starter Dane Dunning pitching six innings, he got the no-decision. He allowed two runs on three hits. Two of those hits were home runs. He walked three, and struck out six. Dennis Santana got the win. He now has a record of 2–1, with an ERA of 2.45. Santana pitched the ninth inning, and gave up one run on one hit. He also struck out one. There was no save recorded.
