Rockies 4, Rangers 1
ARLINGTON, Texas, April 12 – The word early gets tossed around a lot in the game of baseball. It’s mostly used when one describes a less than desirable beginning to a season for a certain team, or teams. It’s also used to promote a positive way of thinking. That is the exact mentality that the Texas Rangers need to have going forward. It is very early, indeed. On Tuesday night, the Rangers played the finale in a short two-game series against the Colorado Rockies at Globe Life Field. On this night, however, the home crowd of 15,862 watched helplessly as their Rangers fell to the visiting Rockies by a final score of 4–1.
Lack of Offense
The Rangers only managed to put one run on the board all evening. It came from an RBI single by infielder Andy Ibanez. His base hit allowed Mitch Garver to score. It also moved Nathaniel Lowe into scoring position, but he would go no further. The Rangers did have another opportunity later in the game to put more runs on the board. In the bottom of the fifth inning, Corey Seager blasted one off Rockies’ right-hander Jhoulys Chacin to deep center field. It looked like it was going to leave the ballpark, but it was not to be. Rockies’ outfielder Randal Grichuk scaled the wall, and made a spectacular catch to rob Seager’s potential home run. The Rangers just didn’t look focused at the plate on Tuesday.
The same could be said for their pitching. Left-hander Martin Perez got the start for the Rangers on Tuesday. He didn’t pitch too badly, but he did have his miscues. He pitched four innings. Over the course of those four innings, he gave up three runs, all earned, on seven hits. He struck out two batters, and walked only one. The good news is that he did not allow a home run. That is always a plus. At the end of the night, Perez ended up with the losing decision. His record for 2022 now sits at 0–1. The aforementioned reliever Chacin got the win for the Rockies (2–2). He pitched two and two third innings in relief. He came in the fourth inning when Rockies’ starter Chad Kuhl started to look shaky.
Rockies Offense
Kuhl pitched four and a third innings. He gave up one earned run on two hits. He walked four and struck out five. Like Perez, he also didn’t give up any home runs. Meanwhile, the Rockies got their scoring started in the top of the third inning. Charlie Blackmon drove in Garrett Thompson with a single. This run tied the game at 1–1. The single also moved Connor Joe to second base. Moments later, Colorado made it 2–1 thanks to a double by Kris Bryant. This drove in Connor Joe, and moved Blackmon over to third base. Their next run came in the top of the fifth inning. Joe scored on a groundout hit into by C.J. Cron. Now the score was 3–1 in favor of Colorado. Their final run came on a sacrifice fly by Kris Bryant that brought in Joe. Texas’ record now sits at 1–4. Once again, it is early, and right now, that is one of the messages that manager Chris Woodward needs to preach to his players.
