White Sox Take Finale from Rangers

August 8, 2022 by Last Word On Baseball

White Sox

White Sox 8, Rangers 2

ARLINGTON, Texas, Aug 7 — It appears that the bottle that was used to hold the Texas Rangers‘ offense from the previous two games broke over night, as they were held to just two runs in an 8–2 loss to the Chicago White Sox on Sunday afternoon. Rangers first baseman Nathaniel Lowe hit a solo home run in the bottom of the seventh inning, but that would turn out to be the ceiling on this Texas offense for the day against the White Sox. Now, the Rangers head out on the road for a three-game set against the Houston Astros. That series starts on Tuesday evening at Houston’s Minute Maid Park.

White Sox Offense

The White Sox got on the board first in the bottom of the second inning. Second baseman Josh Harrison scored on a sharp single to left field by AJ Pollock. This base hit came off Rangers right-hander Spencer Howard. One inning later, the Sox extended their lead to 3–0 on a two-run home run to centerfield by Andrew Vaughn. The Rangers answered back with their the first of their two runs in the bottom of the third inning. It came on a single to right field by Nathaniel Lowe that allowed Marcus Semien to cross the plate. Corey Seager advanced to third base on the play. Later in the bottom of the seventh inning, Lowe hit a solo shot to right field to give the Rangers their second run of the afternoon. At 452 ft, it now stands as the longest home run at Globe Life Field this season.

Chicago scored two more runs in the top half of the fourth inning. Shortstop Leury Garcia, and AJ Pollock both scored on an RBI double by Luis Robert. It was Robert’s 14th double of the season. One batter later, Robert was driven in on a single to left field by Eloy Jimenez. In the top of the sixth inning, Jimenez scored on a bases loaded walk to White Sox third baseman Yoan Moncada. This made the score 7–1 in favor of the White Sox. The White Sox’ eighth and final run came on an fielding error by Rangers third baseman Ezequiel Duran. The error allowed Leury Garcia to score.

Pitching Notes

Rangers right-hander Spencer Howard started this game against the White Sox in the Sunday matinee. Howard suffered his second loss in as many starts after allowing six runs (five earned), a season-high eight hits, and a walk over 3 1/3 innings. He permitted runs in the second, third, and fourth innings. Howard has gone 0–2 with a 13.50 ERA (11 ER/7 1/3 IP) in two starts this month after going 2-1 over five starts in July. His overall record for 2022 now sits at 2–4, with an ERA of 7.41.

Lucas Giolito started this one for the White Sox on Sunday. He allowed one run in five innings pitched, and earned his eighth win of the season. Giolito has won his first two starts in August, after going 2–2 over five starts in July. He has issued ten walks in his last three starts, but has allowed only six earned runs in that span for the White Sox. His overall record for 2022 now sits at 8–6, with an ERA of 4.91. There was no save recorded in this game.
