The two New York teams have acquired players for their playoff pushes
The New York Yankees and the New York Mets have each made moves to bolster their teams for their respective playoff races, per reports. The Yankees have reportedly acquired third baseman Ryan McMahon from the Colorado Rockies in exchange for pitching prospects Griffin Herring and Josh Grosz. The Mets have acquired lefthanded relief pitcher Gregory Soto from the Baltimore Orioles for pitching prospects Wellington Aracena and Cameron Foster.
The Yankees have gotten little production from their third base position, which has been primarily been manned by Oswald Peraza, who has a .147/.208/.237 slash line, and Oswaldo Cabrera, who has a .243/.322/.308 slash line. McMahon has a .217/.314/.403 slash line, good for a 92 OPS+, so far this season, along with a 1.4 bWAR. He is owed $32 million after this season, and the Yankees are reportedly taking on that entire amount.
Herring, 22, was the Yankees’ 6th round pick out of LSU last year, and has a 1.71 ERA in 16 starts between low-A and high-A. BA has him as the #17 prospect in the Yankees’ system. Grosz, 22, was the Yankees’ 11th round pick in 2023 out of East Carolina. He has a 4.14 ERA in 15 starts and a relief appearance this year in high-A, and is not among the top 30 prospects on BA’s Yankees list.
The Orioles acquired Soto from the Philadelphia Phillies last summer for Moises Chace and Seth Johnson. A free agent after this season, Soto has a 3.96 ERA and 3.29 FIP in 36.1 IP over 45 appearances this year. Aracena, a 20 year old righthander, is the 28th ranked prospect on the BA Mets list, with a 2.38 ERA in 64.1 IP in 17 appearances at low-A in 2025. Foster, 26, was a 14th round pick out of McNeese State in 2022, and has a 2.97 ERA in 30.1 IP over 21 appearances between AA and AAA.
