The Rangers brought up Yonny Hernandez to replace the injured Eli White
The Texas Rangers have purchased the contact of infielder Yonny Hernandez and added him to the active roster, the team announced. To clear a spot on the active roster for Yonny, the Rangers have placed Eli White on the injured list with an elbow strain. To clear a spot on the 40 man roster, the Rangers transferred Willie Calhoun to the 60 day injured list.
In addition, the team announced that Delino DeShields has been traded to the Boston Red Sox for cash considerations.
Yonny Hernandez is a tiny (he’s listed at 5’9”, 140 lbs. by B-R), very fast infielder who has spent the season with AAA Round Rock. He has slashed .250/.424/.323 this year with 21 steals in 31 attempts while playing all three infield spots.
Yonny has always had great on base skills, but players with his skill set often have problems translating that to the majors, as the lack of power results in pitchers just throwing strikes and challenging them to hit it. He is a minor league free agent after this season if he’s not on the 40 man roster, so like Drew Anderson, Jharel Cotton and Jimmy Herget, he’s someone it makes sense to look at now.
White was a late scratch from yesterday’s game due to his elbow. No indication yet as to how serious it is.
As for Delino, he now gets to be minor league depth for a contending team, and possibly get a chance to contribute in a pennant race.
