Dallas Star depth forward Colin Blackwell has signed a two-year deal worth $775k to remain with the Stars. Blackwell gambled on himself by signing a one-year, $775,000 contract with the Stars last off-season, and he gets a similar contract this summer, just for a longer term.

The undersized centre has bounced around the league for much of his career, having his best season with the New York Rangers during the 2020-21 campaign. He had a career-best 22 points that year and reached double-digits in goal-scoring for the first time.
Blackwell played for six different franchises during his first six seasons but seemed to find a home in Dallas last season. He often played on the fourth line but occasionally filled in other places in the lineup due to injuries. He played in a career-high 63 games and tied his second-best season point total with 17 (six goals, 11 assists).
Blackwell was also a huge contributor in the playoffs, often bringing much-needed energy and aggressiveness to the lineup. He only scored once, but it was an overtime game-winner to tie the first-round series against the Colorado Avalanche. That series went seven games, so it’s possible Dallas doesn’t make it out of the opening round without Blackwell.
What It Means
The Stars are retaining a two-way, bottom-six forward who excels on the penalty kill. The offensive numbers aren’t impressive, but he has underrated skills and brings an abundance of energy to both ends of the ice. After all, it’s the overlooked little plays and unsung contributions that have allowed Blackwell to finally establish his playing identity and his career.
The Stars are looking to overcome the hump this season and reach the Stanley Cup Final. Blackwell will look to play a role for a Stars team whose eyes are on Lord Stanley.
