Longest-Tenured Dallas Star Makes a Decision on His Future

June 27, 2025 by Last Word On Hockey

Many were curious about the future of Dallas Stars captain Jamie Benn. Even more so after the team was eliminated in the Western Conference Final. Is he going to play next year? Will he stay in Dallas? Today we find out Jamie Benn, the soon-to-be 36-year-old, signs a one-year deal to stay in Big D. It is reported that it is a $1 million deal, with potential for some over-35 performance bonus incentives.

Jamie Benn Re-Signs with Only NHL He’s Ever Known, Dallas

Benn has spent his entire 16-year NHL career with the Stars. Dallas drafted him in the fifth round of the 2007 NHL Entry Draft. He has become one of the great late-round success stories, displaying a unique and physical two-way game for much of his career, earning multiple All-Star selections while climbing franchise leaderboards and record-holder lists, and becoming captain of a Stanley Cup contender.

Still, the decrease in his offensive production over the last two years and his performance during this past playoff run had many wondering if this was the end of his time in Dallas. After a resurgent season in 2022-23 where he scored 32 goals and tallied 74 points, Benn’s totals have severely dropped in recent seasons. He had just 16 goals and 49 points last year and only three points in 18 playoff games.

On a team as deep as Dallas was, he didn’t have to be the same type of player he once was, but Dallas needs better than that.

Sure, Benn and general manager Jim Nill publicly voiced the mutual interest in a new contract several times throughout the year. But was it really going to happen when you compare early-season remarks to his play on the ice? Plus, Benn had begun to frustrate many loyal fans with untimely and childish penalties at critical points of playoff games and series.

Evidently, his leadership and ability to drive a playoff contender, has allowed him to be successful for so long.

What It Means

As Jamie Benn re-signs, Dallas knows who they have. He is an ultra-productive player with tremendous leadership and influence in the locker room. Plus, he has a hunger for more playoff success. By sticking in Dallas, he has a chance to prove he can still play at a high level. It is likely going he will now be accepting a reduced role on the fourth line. That’s not often a spot where an NHL team wants to play its captain, but it’s where Benn’s skills fit these days.
