Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott is heading into the final year of his current contract.
Because of Dallas’ previous commitment to Prescott and the size of his cap hit this season, it has long been assumed that the two sides would work out a long-term deal this offseason.
However, the tone out of the annual league meetings in Orlando this week tells a different story.
“The #Cowboys and QB Dak Prescott have a mutual understanding of his contract situation, sources say, with no offers from Dallas despite him being in a contract year,” NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport said. “Owner Jerry Jones said, ‘We are where we are, locked and loaded for this year.’ No indication a deal is coming. This appears to clears the path for Dak Prescott to test free agency in 2025.”
There’s still time for the situation to change, but assuming Prescott plays out the year and hits the free market next March, he should command plenty of interest.
While several teams should and would the three-time Pro Bowler, we’ll concentrate on three of them for his post.
Pittsburgh Steelers
Pittsburgh has Russell Wilson and Justin Fields leading its QB room in 2024 but has only made one-year commitments to both. Given their track record of success under Mike Tomlin, the Steelers are also unlikely to be in position to pick a quarterback early in the 2025 NFL Draft.
If Pittsburgh lets Wilson and Fields walk, they would be a tremendous fit for a quarterback of Prescott’s experience and ability level.
Denver Broncos
Speaking of Russell Wilson, the Broncos let him go this offseason and currently have Jarrett Stidham and Ben DiNucci as the only quarterbacks on their roster.
It seems likely Denver will draft a QB next month, but what if they kick the can down the road to next offseason? Dak could be an intriguing option for Sean Payton as he heads into his third season with the Broncos.
Las Vegas Raiders
Las Vegas signed veteran Gardner Minshew to a two-year deal to compete with 2023 fourth-rounder Aidan O’Connell for the starting role in 2023. It’s possible they add a third quarterback to the mix in the draft.
The Raiders’ roster has some legit pieces, and owner Mark Davis loves to make a splash. Luring Dak away from America’s Team would certainly qualify as that.
